There are very few guarantees in life, but adversity is one that we will all face at one time or another. We may lose a family member, a relationship may end or we may find ourselves out of work struggling to pay the bills. During these tough times adversity can be a challenging test and a harsh teacher, but the reality is adversity is what you make of it. It can be viewed as a hindrance or an opportunity. Whether we believe it or not we have a choice. The experience can control us or we can decide to use it to our advantage. This was the underlining message of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. He once said, “Whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.”
If you want to know who you are when adversity strikes, pay close attention to yourself when things are not going your way. Do you use unfavourable events to your advantage? Do you complain about the situation? Or do you effectively manage the challenge?
During these times it may be too tough on our own to successfully deal with the situation in a constructive manner. Alternatively, seeking guidance from a professional coach or counsellor can prove to be advantageous option. Their skills and knowledge can provide strategies that can have a positive impact now and in the future.
